08.12.2015 Messe Frankfurt Group reports record sales of around €645 million

Messe Frankfurt is continuing to grow. The company is the leading international trade fair organiser with its own exhibition grounds. On presenting the Group’s preliminary key figures for 2015, Wolfgang Marzin, President and Chief Executive Officer of Messe Frankfurt, summed up: “We expect to generate sales of around €645 million – a new record for our company”. Earnings before tax will be well over the €40 million mark. Marzin: “But we are expecting our result to be as high as it was in the past year.” The figure then was €47 million. Adjusted for depreciation costs and financing costs, current EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation) is €98 million. Consolidated annual net income will once again be more than €30 million.

Domestic sales have grown and consolidated sales are in the region of €400 million. This means that 57 percent of Group sales – some €370 million in all – can be attributed to the company’s Frankfurt base. Operating business outside Germany has increased to €246 million. As Wolfgang Marzin explains: “By expanding business substantially in our relevant growth markets, we now generate 38 percent of our sales revenue outside Germany.”

At the end of the year, Messe Frankfurt will have 2,297 active employees.

Dynamic event year worldwide with many new records

Our company’s operating business was exceptionally dynamic, in part due to the rotation of events. As Detlef Braun, Member of the Executive Board of Messe Frankfurt, explains: “Many new records were set on our highly successful platforms during the event year”. No fewer than 132 trade fairs and exhibitions were held worldwide, playing host to around 89,800 companies and more than four million visitors – more than ever before. A total of 86 events were held outside Germany, setting new records with around 48,000 exhibitors and over 1.7 million visitors. Braun: “In the future, we will continue to concentrate on what we know and what makes us successful: our core areas of expertise.”

He cited worldwide textile network Texpertise Network as a prime example of how the company links core expertise. The current total of 49 textile fairs operating under the Messe Frankfurt banner cover the entire textile value chain and therefore represent the global textile trade. Textile events at our Frankfurt base are also continuing to grow.

For instance, Heimtextil has been one of the great success stories and has been growing steadily in quality and size since 2010. Further growth is on the cards in 2016, when the event will be extended to over 20 hall levels.

Our Mobility & Logistics business field is also expected to continue going from strength to strength. Under its umbrella, the worldwide network brings together, among other things, the Automechanika brand with a current total of 15 events in four continents. The business field is set to be further expanded in the coming year with new trade fairs. In September, the company announced its takeover of Eurasia Moto Bike Expo in Istanbul.

As home to the flagship events, Frankfurt remains the permanent base for the company’s international event management. As Braun emphasises: “From here, we control our worldwide brand management and initiate ideas for our activities around the globe.”

The Guest Events business division had an extremely strong year owing to the rotation of events, with the three major traditional guest events – ACHEMA, IAA Cars and the Frankfurt Book Fair – all taking place in the Frankfurt exhibition grounds. Uwe Behm, Member of the Executive Board of Messe Frankfurt: “We had a veritable record year.” The company’s congress and conference business showed great momentum, chalking up some 150 events and 128,000 visitors. Behm: “In the Congress Center and Kap Europa, we have two excellent congress buildings that are held in very high esteem by our customers. Suitable for a wide range of event sizes, the buildings help to raise the international profile of the Rhine-Main region as a centre for congresses and conventions.”

Formnext powered by TCT – international trade fair for tool-making, mould-making, additive technologies and 3D printing – made its successful debut, featuring 232 exhibitors and some 9,000 visitors. Behm: “Thanks also to the extensive support of our exhibitors, we have succeeded in establishing a new and forward-looking trade fair on the market. An exceptionally high level of satisfaction was reported among exhibitors and visitors alike.”

Messe Frankfurt is taking the next steps in developing its exhibition grounds, with preparations for the construction of Hall 12 currently in full swing. Uwe Behm: “As in the past, we want to complete the construction project on time and on budget.”

Expansion of worldwide sector expertise and networking

Messe Frankfurt aims to continue growing and to hone its competitive edge on the market. Wolfgang Marzin sees the broad worldwide sector expertise as one of the corporate group’s most important success factors. The company wants to promote even more synergies within its portfolio, including the further development of established flagship events in Frankfurt. Marzin emphasised that this relates to areas such as security which have made Messe Frankfurt an established name around the world but which are not yet associated with its Frankfurt base. 2016 will see the Intersec Forum, a conference for networked security technology, taking place for the first time parallel to Light + Building.

Messe Frankfurt is extremely satisfied with the resounding success of its contribution to Expo 2015. This was the first time in the company’s history that it organised the German Pavilion at an international Expo.

The pavilion was singled out for several prizes, including the Gold Award from the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) for its theme-based design.

Summing up Messe Frankfurt’s strategic plans, Wolfgang Marzin stated: “With a very solid starting position and a strategic company orientation geared towards the long term, we are well equipped for the future and we will continue to concentrate on what makes us successful.”
